3rd Family Preference

(Married Children of U.S. Citizens)

The third family-based preference consists of married sons and daughters of United States citizens and their spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age. The yearly numerical quota for this category is 23,400 visas in addition to unused visas from the first and second preference categories.

Third preference immigrants do not qualify under the unlimited visa category of other immediate relatives of United States citizens because of age and marital status. As such, they are subjected to the same numerical limitations of other limited categories.
