hi denise, ill try to get you a statement of our experiences together soon, in the meanwhile i wanted to share with you an experience i had on my 2d trip to the Phils.  I was waiting in the Tokyo airport for my flight to Manila when i overhead 2 men talking, they were both pursuing Filipina brides, the one man was relating to the second, that he had done all his paperwork himself and had a lawyer friend(not an immigration specialist) to look it over but otherwise had done all the paperwork himself, he was now on his way to the Philippines to get his fiance to get married and bring her back to the United States as he had gotten an "VISA" for her but she had procastinated and had not yet gotten her passport, taken her physical or been interviewed.  What im sure is the case, is that he had recieved an approved petiton from USCIS, mistook this for a visa, and was under the impression that he could go and get the girl a passport and all else in a 2 week visit and bring her back with him..I felt sorry for him but at this point i kept quiet as i could not affect the net result of his lack of knowledge and preparation that an immigration lawer could have prepared him for.    i think this might be good for your web site...........jim

hi denise, maybe the best for me is to try and list these experiences phase by phase and in several shorter emails, i think my first thought of the k-1 application process is that i could not believe that any United States official process should take that long(i was told 6-12 months), i thought this has to be people with difficult or problem petitions, it was not, lol., my ;second thought was about the paperwork needed to be gathered for the petition, its was way too repetitive and a lot of what i deemed to be "over the top", as an example, why did i need a letter from a bank officer when i have bank statements, ;why do i need a bio on my parents if i have a valid passport or birth cert., i would also recommend to anyone thnking of doing this process to keep everything possible in the way of reciepts, tickets, photos, letters, cards, and in retrospective all phone bills, expired phone cards or credit card statements where any item remoptely connected with the relationship is listed.  also although yahoo messenger is a wonderful and economical way to communicate it is difficult to produce proof of contact, a better idea might be daily emails that are printed, saved and dated, also keep all cards, letters etc with the envelopes.  the last thing ill list in this note is to say that everyone must be PATIENT, which as you know i am not, the government gets in a hurry for no one and i ;have discovered that you cannot speed the process, lol, i was wrong, one more thing for today, a lesson learned, the government does not care and will not help at all, and will not assist with meaningful information or timeframes..............more to follow later, hope this helps,    jim

2- Jelma seemed to have little difficulty gathering her info and documents, the biggest problems were time and distance to her province, its a full days travel, although the actual distance is only about 100 miles, there is travel by land, ferry and small boat involved, and she did have some small difficulty in downloading some of the forms due poor facilities at some of the internet cafes she tried to use, i do not know how this was done in any kind of reasonable timeframe prior to the internet, i pity anyone using the mails and courier services.
the next part to me was prob ;the hardest, just waiting and not understanding what and why the govt. was taking so long to process what i look at as a simple petition, again do not believe any of the websites as far as expected processing/wait times., ;additionally i do not understand the role of the NVC in a fiance visa where quotas are not in play, yet the govt mailed my paperwork back and forth across the county and ultimately to manila, i remember thinking that we were way ahead of schedule when the approved application was forwarded to manila, it arrived electronically in manila on april 1 and the paper file was recieved on april 10,lol, at that time the manila website showed 20 days as anticipated processing time, during tthat 10 day period it was changed to 70-80 WORKING days, and at the same time the embassy went to a 4 day worki week to save electricity, WOW was i angry and upset, and i think the waiting may have been even harder for jelma, she could not plan anything in advance, she was just waiting, i at least had my work and tv, internet etc to fill my time.  THANKS denise i know you tried to keep me patient but i just think this whole process is too cumbersome and needs someone in the government to step in and streamline the paperwork and to make the agencies share information and consolidate operations, for example why can the uscis not assign a priority to visa applicatons in house why do we need the NVC, especially for non quota visas, this would elimate a month just in mail time!!!!!  more later, jim     ps is this what you want or am i way off base?????

3- as i stated earlier now im waiting, and as i wait the wait times increase and the embassy takes days off for american holidays, phil holidays, and power outages, wow was i disgusted, as i waited i attempeted to call the numbes listed on the web site, they were no longer working numbers although they still ring, this cost a lot in phone card charges, also the number to be called from the phils has a charge and all they seem to say is that yes you are on the list, just wait.  as also stated earlier information is hard to come by, as fianally we got a appt time for a physical, now we had to coordinate flight and hotels and local transportation, jelma had never flown in a plane nor had she been to manila, as a side note; manila is a very large ugly and dangerous place to be, i highly recommend getting a room at a reputalble hotel close to the embassy and not venturing out at night alone or as a couple.fianlly ;the day arrived and jelma had to arrive in manila the day prior in order to be at the clinic at early morn, she was  finished with the physical by 1pm, partially due to choosing to allow a male doctor to conduct the exam, ladies may opt for a female physican, but this can slow down the process.  NOW the bomb ,at least for us, jelma had to return on monday for the results and any possible re-exams iin case of process the exams any probs were encountered, we had not planned for this, she did not have clothes, money or plans to stay and had return plane reservations for that fri night, we now had to decide to change everything and stay or to make a trip back on monday, she stayed, i western unioned her funds andshe was to return to ;the clinic at 1pm on mondday for the results, she did not get the results till after 5, she missed her flight again, all of this could have been avoided with info from the clinic and the embassy about procedures and timeframes, ;finally on tues morn she returned to cebu, knowing that she had to return on fri for her interview, this really hampered her planning to visit her family and to take some items to the family home that she anticipated she would not need prior to her coming to the usa.................next the interview

part 3,lol, this is the 3rd time i have written part 3, i keep losing it for some reason before its sent............finally the big day arrives, the interview at the embassy in manilla, did i mention thepart aboutr having to stay extra days in manila after the physical to check results, another little item no one told us about when we were planning funds and travel plans and final prep to close up her apt there and to make ready to come to the u.s., ;ending up having to wire money in the middle of the night and to change flight reservations to stay for the results, jelma did not know of the extra days do did not take clothes of money for an extended trip, expected overnight only.............finally the interview, and horror........jelma calls me in the middle of the night to tell me she was denied, i thought she was kidding until i realized she was sobbing, then  i became angry, mad as hell and spittng bullets, i tried to calm her and at the same time find out what had happened........."no petitionalble relationship" made no sense yet that is what she told me and indeed that was the reason given in writing, but not explained, she had been interviewed by a very strict and impersonal and seeming unfeeling consulate officer who was more interested in our age difference than in our decisinon to be together, we were both devistated and unsure what to do or where to turn next.........after contacting you in the morning i started firing off endless and unanswered emails and calls to every government offical and agency i could think of to include my state representative and u.s. senator, it was diuring tlhis period i discovered that there is no appeals process, her decision was final, all i could do was hope for a second interview as soon as possible, the unknowing part was horrible, how could i assure jelma when i did not know myself what could be done,  i can tell anyone this, the government does not care about you or your happiness and they do not want anyone to tell them ;they are wrong, only ;with the help of Cann Legal Group(Denise) and with the assistance of my senator did we finally get a 2d interview later,in fact the 2d interview was exacty 8 months after jelma and i got engaged and decided to take this step together..........next the 2d interview

4- the 2d interview, after weeks and endless calls and emails finally a 2d interview is granted, we only ;had 2 weeks notice but at this opint we were thrilled because with no appeals process we did not know when or if we would get this chance, i dropped everything at work, found a flight, no matter the cost for late booking, and planned to be in manila the day before the interview(on my first trip to the phils my first connecting flight had been cancelled due to mechanical problems and i did not want to chance being late for the 2d ;interview), i arrived in manila ;about ;midnight and we spent the day going over the list of possible interview questions, although this w;as mostly nerves, we knew the answers allready.  we went to bed early to be at the embassy at 5am(2 hrs before it opened)this was really a waste of sleep, lol, ;they lined everyone up by appt time and type of petition, finally the guards let us in and we were given a number and each ;time the number was posted on an electric board we were to go to a diff window for some part of processing such as fingerprinting or document presentation and finally the interview with a consular officer, oh yes you should know that the day we were there no working bathroom(c.r.) ;or water fountain or snack machine was available, the kids taken to the embassy were unhappy most ot the time. ;;finally we were notified to go for the interview, we were worried that we would get the same consular officer as before(and she was there) but we got another interviewer...... i went to the window with jelma and was allowed to stay but i was cautioned that this was "HER" interview, ;;jelma had been nervous before and she was again, but unlike the previous interview, this man was real nice and tried to calm her and even asked her if she prefered to be interviewed in native language, which she did!   as i said the interviewer was extremely nice and was even patient with jelma, i ;think this was planned, i believe that the interviention by my senator, the rebuttal by Cann Legal Gp. and my own appeals  had been ;noted by the embassy staff and that we were practically approved prior to the interview.  after about a 15 mn session the iinterview was complete and the interviewer asked if i had anything to add, i asked for his assistance and compassion to allow us to be together, he asked when we planed to return to the united states, i said as soon as possible , he told us to take a seat back in the waiting room, i asked if we were approved, he did not answer but smiled and said not to worry.  we went back to the waiting area, after a few min we were called to yet another window, presented jelmas passport and was told to sit back down that the visa would be ready in a few minutes, we were thrilled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, ;another couple that had been next in line to us was also approved but was not allowed to get the visa until the following monday, another indicator to me that the embassy was on its good behavior with our case, because they knew that they had erred earlier and that we had in a combined effort caught the error and was making noise about it., a few min later we were called back to the window, got the visa and left ;the embassy, it was approx 1pm., we were starved need a bathroom visit  but extremely happy., we had lunch accross the street from the embassy at a hotel and made plans for the days until i could bring her home with me., ;;we had to go back to cebu to get a stamp for her passport by the (i ;think this is correct) Philipino Commission for Overseas Travel, ;the best i can tell this is a requirement that carries a small charge, includes a class to try and prepare people for problems abroad, such as abuse by sponsors and tells basic sources of help ;for filipinos in the outside world., ;finally all the govt paperwork was taken care of, now to book a ticket and go home, oh yes one more small problem, i had booked a round trip ticket for myself but had not bought a ticket for jelma since i did not know the results or timeframe prior to my trip there, when i did go to buy a ticket there was no tickets available from manila to the u.s for any connecting flights to nashville,tn for the next 6 weeks, i was amazed!!! with a lot of footwork, a few pesos placed in the right hands and the help of some sympathetic hotel employees i was guided to a travel agency that somehow did procure a ticket for jelma on the same flight as i had already booked, although by then i would have rescheduled myself just to be together.  we got the ticket and went to cebu, packed her apartment up, rented a jeepney to drive us and her belongings to the harbor, went to bantyan and spent a few days, visited with her family and rested finally in mid august we flew to minn/st paul to be greeted with a long waiting line to clear immigrations, i had allowed over 3 hrs and it was not enough, i had to personally approach the head of the immigration unit there, explain our flight schedule and he pulled jelma through the line and processed her completely at thecounter instead of the customary 2d stop for fiance visas, we were beiing paged for our flight as we ran through the airport, we got there the doors were closed, they reopened we sat down and the flight departed, we had made it, but our luggage did not, lol, it showed up the next day, we landed in nashsville, took a taxi to the hotel where i had left my car, i paid parking and we started home, we arrived in murray about 9pm. about 30 hours after we had gone to the airport in manila, tired but happy and excited to start a new life together.................

hello denise, in addition to the notes i have sent you about my experiences with the embassy and our government i wanted to write a separate note and thank you, altough we have not yet completed all of our paperwork to change jelmas status i wanted you to know that i appreciate all your efforts on our behalf, ;i know ;that sometimes i am a little, lol, abrasive and inpatient, you have been very professional and efficient in your job and at the same time taken the time to counsel and comfort me in our efforts to overcome the multi faceted effort it takes to complete the tasks to achieve a satisfactory outcome to a tedious and overly(in my opinion)complicated process to allow 2 people to be together once the people involved have made a personal decision., again ;thanks and i will and have allready recommended your services to others needing assistance and guidance in immigration matters, and frankly i ;think anyone trying to do this without professional assistance is just plain crazy, our government does not care about or will not help an individual in these matters, so we need professional help on our side, its even better when the professional help is caring and compassionate as you have shown yourself to be, again thanks,      jim
